Costco Price Adjustment Policy: What Qualifies

You buy a coffee maker at Costco for $129. Three days later it’s $99. In Canada you can ask for the $30 back — Costco honours price adjustment requests on warehouse purchases within 30 days of purchase, as long as the item is still in stock and within its promotional dates. (Costco Canada)

This page explains what the policy covers, what it doesn’t, and how to notice the drop while the window is still open. If you already know it dropped and just want to claim it, use the step-by-step guide to getting a Costco price adjustment.

Warehouse and Costco.ca are two different policies

This is the part that catches people out. The two are handled separately, and neither matches the other’s price.

What qualifies

From Costco Canada’s published policy:

  • Warehouse purchases within 30 days of the purchase date
  • The item must be in stock — demonstration merchandise doesn’t count
  • The current price must be within its valid promotional dates
  • Costco.ca orders, through the online request form, within the same 30 days

Beyond the published wording, the everyday cases are ordinary merchandise that goes on a supplier deal or gets marked down: groceries, household goods, electronics, seasonal items, Kirkland Signature products.

What doesn’t qualify

Costco Canada’s pages name these exclusions for Costco.ca orders: resellers, precious metals, gift cards and live event tickets, and some promotions such as Spend & Get or Buy More Save More. Items out of stock, or price changes outside a promotion’s dates, are excluded in the warehouse.

Other categories — special orders, installation services, fuel and pharmacy — are commonly reported as excluded but are not named on the pages above, so check with your warehouse rather than assuming.

The 30-day clock

The countdown starts on the purchase date, not the delivery date. There’s no grace period: past 30 days the price adjustment is gone, though Costco’s return policy is a separate thing that may still apply.

Where price drops actually come from

Prices move for a few predictable reasons, and the shelf sign tells you which:

  • Supplier deals (prices ending .49, .79, .89) — temporary, funded by the manufacturer
  • Warehouse markdowns (.97) — a local decision to move stock
  • Clearance (.00, .88, often with an asterisk) — the item is on its way out

Our guide to Costco price tag codes explains each ending. The categories where a 30-day drop is most likely: electronics, seasonal items after a holiday, bulk household goods and anything on a rotating Kirkland promotion.

The hard part is noticing

Nobody remembers the 40 things in last weekend’s cart, and Costco changes promotions constantly. That’s the actual reason most adjustments go unclaimed — not the policy, which is generous.

Two ways to handle it:

  1. Manually. Keep receipts, note the purchase dates, and check the shelf price of anything expensive on your next trip.
  2. Automatically. RefundWatcher reads the item numbers off your receipt, watches those items across Canadian warehouses, and messages you when one drops — with the item number, the difference, and how long you have left.

Our users tell us they save an average of $240+ per year by letting the app do the watching, and most report saving between $240–480 annually, with the heaviest Costco shoppers often exceeding $500.

A real example: $58 from one trip

In two weeks of using RefundWatcher, we caught $58 in eligible refunds from a single Costco trip:

  • Red cherries — a refund when the price dropped from $11.99
  • Reese’s assorted snacks — $3.00 back when the price dropped from $14.99 to $11.99
  • Softsoap body wash — back when it went from $15.49
  • Plus smaller drops on other groceries

That’s the app’s refunds screen: warehouse, purchase date, item photo, item number, the claim deadline, and the amount.

Claiming it

The claim itself takes five minutes at the membership counter, or a form for Costco.ca orders. The step-by-step guide covers what to bring, which counter to use, and how online orders differ.

FAQ

How long do I have? Thirty days from the purchase date, for both warehouse and Costco.ca purchases.

Do I need my receipt? It helps. Costco’s published policy doesn’t require one, and staff can often look up the purchase against your membership.

Does it work for online purchases? Yes, but through the Costco.ca request form, and the credit goes to your original payment method — typically 5–7 business days.

Can I claim a warehouse purchase at a different warehouse? Costco’s page says to visit “your local warehouse” and doesn’t rule other locations in or out, so call ahead if it won’t be the one you bought from.

Do I need to bring the item back? No. A price adjustment isn’t a return — you keep the item and get the difference.
